What Makes a Good ATV/UTV Tire? Size, Tread, Ply-Rating, and Shape.

re's a lot to consider when looking for an ATV/UTV tire. Some of the important criteria to consider include: Tread, ply-rating, shape, and size.

The part of the tire most people notice is probably the tread pattern. When looking for a tire, it's important to think about what kind of terrain the ATV/UTV will be riding in. For all-terrain use, a tread pattern with elongated lateral lugs is best. Another common trait of these tires is a deeper tread depth, 1/2" or more is typical. These tires have good traction without making the ride too rough. A good example of this tread pattern is the MASSFX KT 25x10-12. For sport quads and racing ATV's, a tread pattern that has a shorter tread depth and more square lugs which allow the tread to grip in any direction. This tread design allows for better traction in the looser surfaces that sport quads ride on. The MASSFX MO 22x10-10 tread pattern is a great example of this style.

Another important aspect of a tire is the ply-rating. The ply of a tire is simply how many plies that are bonded together to construct the tire; therefore, the more plies, the thicker the tire. An ATV/UTV tire needs to be tough since it will most likely be driving through rocks, sticks, and other debris. A thicker, higher ply tire would be best for these situations; however, if the ply-rating becomes to thick, the tire will be very stiff and make for a rough and uncomfortable ride. MASSFX tires come in 4-ply and 6-ply which offer both durability and a comfortable ride.

Tire shape is something that the everyday ATV rider is not going to give much thought; however, it is still important when it comes to the different terrains that they are used on. When riding on softer terrains and rocky surfaces, a rounder tire will work best. These tires will be able to grab those surfaces much easier than a flatter tire could. A good example of this is the MASSFX MS 25x8-12 model of tires. A tire with a flatter shaped is best suited to flatter and firmer surfaces. Most of these tires will be seen on sport quads and racing ATV's. With this design these tires can draw better traction on harder and flush surfaces. These tires are usually seen only on the rear since thinner rounded tires help with turning. The MASSFX MO 20x10-9 is the ideal tire for these situations.

Tire size is obviously an important factor when looking for new tires. Unless any modifications have been made to the ATV/UTV that the tires will be going on, it is best to stick with the stock tire size. Tires too large could damage axles with the extra weight and stress and tires too small causes a higher RPM and could over-work the transmission and engine. Narrow tires are better for turning while wider tires are often best for traction.
